Smiling Nissan Pavilion staffers hand out free copies of Coldplay’s new live CD after the May 21 concert. In contrast to recent photography bans at the Charlottesville Pavilion during such concerts as Emmylou Harris and Heart, cameras and flash clicked like mad all through the show by Britain’s latest fab four.

Hard-hitting Cavs capture first regional title

For the first time ever, the UVA baseball team is headed to the NCAA Super Regionals next weekend, one of 16 college teams across the country who will compete for the chance to play in the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. After capturing the ACC title May 24 by defeating Florida State in Durham, N. C., the Cavs and head coach Brian O’Connor (pictured) headed out to to Irvine, CA, where they handed San Diego State pitching phenom Stephen Strasburg (expected to be the #1 pick in the 2009 MLB draft) his first loss of the season. The Cavs then went on to beat top-seeded UC Irvine 4-1 yesterday to capture their first NCAA Regional championship. (0)

‘Child Mummy Sacrifice’ airs

Filmmaker and occasional Crozet resident Rick Preve co-produces Child Mummy Sacrifice, the story of three perfectly preserved, 500-year-old mummies found on a South American volcano. The show airs on the National Geographic Channel (Channel 109 on Comcast) at 10pm Tuesday, June 2. (0)

Brownlee loses bid to become Attorney General

After more than a year of campaigning following his resignation as U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Virginia last spring, John Brownlee will not be Virginia’s next Attorney General. On Sunday, May 31, the former fixture in Charlottesville’s federal courthouse lost his bid for the Republican nomination to State Senator Ken Cuccinelli of Fairfax in a vote at the Republican Party of Virginia’s annual convention in Richmond. Snap o’ the Day: Crozet library site

Albemarle County knocked down this house in preparation for building a new library, but the budget experts didn’t count on recession, so the library’s on hold. The house is part of “Lost Albemarle,” the current exhibition at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Historical Society. (1)

Snap o’ the Day: Bio-retention along 250

Now that UVA is building a 50-bed long term acute care hospital, or LTACH, on Ivy Road alongside Volvo of Charlottesville, it’s doing something about runoff in the area, a commercial district in a rural part of Albemarle. Much as it did with the John Paul Jones Arena, UVA will eventually fill this stormwater and bio-retention pond, photographed May 19, with native plants. (0)
