UVA law professor Jon Cannon, who until recently served on the Albemarle Planning Commision, has been selected for the second-in-command position of deputy administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, subject to U.S. Senate confirmation. If approved, Cannon will take a leave of absence from the Law School.

Longtime Live Arts artistic director John Gibson will leave the building at the end of 2009 after 18 years at the community theater. Besides overseeing 200 shows and 50 special events, Gibson also led the construction and move to the theater’s current digs on Water Street. Next up? “I have no idea what I’m doing,” he says. “I’m leaping into the unknown.” One thing spurred Gibson, who’s approaching 44. “The saddest thing I can imagine is me at age 64 on a ladder wiring together another Gala chandelier.” –PHOTO BY JACK LOONEY (1)
Planned Parenthood Health Systems is closing its Lynchburg health center on June 30 “due to the weakened economy and its effects on our operating budget,” according to a release from the nonprofit’s vice president, David Nova. The nonprofit dedicated to women’s health care is controversial for one of the services it provides, although much of its mission focuses on education and preventative health care. According to the release, Lynchburg patients– men, women and teens– will now have to travel to Planned Parenthood’s health centers in Roanoke and Charlottesville. Educational outreach will continue in Lynchburg. (3)
After some speculation that he might join his former Virginia Cavaliers teammate Chris Long with the St. Louis Rams, UVA fourth-year offensive tackle Eugene Monroe was the eighth overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft, selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Monroe’s selection marks the fourth time in five years that a player from UVA has been drafted in the first round. Three other Wahoos heard their names called over the weekend: linebacker Clint Sintim was selected in the second round by the New York Giants, and running back Cedric Peerman became a Baltimore Raven in the sixth round, and tight end John Phillips went to the Dallas Cowboys, also in the sixth round.

The north fork of the Moormans River in Shenandoah National Park provided a cool way to deal with the weekend’s blistering temps, which reached 91 Saturday and 89 Sunday, the day this image was captured. Temps will remain hot until Wednesday. (3)
Disband the EPA. It was created under Nixon and has ran its course. If the EPA wants to help the environment, it can start by disconnecting the utilities in all of its offices and tell its employees to park their cars and stay home.
The EPA has become a piece of crap that puppets California’s fruitcake environmental laws.

EPA’s activities overlap and are redundant with state DEQ agencies. Disand the EPA or disband every last state DEQ. One or the other. Time to go on a diet.
