If you’re at all curious what U2’s Charlottesville gig will be like, the band has launched a high-tech virtual preview of their “360 Degree Tour.” As the name suggests, Ireland’s biggest rockers will be performing in-the-round on a set designed by architect Mark Fisher, who was also the man behind the massive “Bigger Bang” stage Charlottesville saw at the Rolling Stones’ 2005 Scott Stadium gig.
According to this morning’s Daily Progress, an Albemarle-hired expert has declared that B.F. Yancey Elementary School holds insufficient land for the jumbo-sized septic field it might need to expand. But what if the folks at Worrell Water, themselves experts in answering the call of nature with a call to nature, and popular in progressive school districts, could get involved? The U2 concert stage has arrived. Parts of it anyway. The 360ยบ Tour, with its spider-like stage, requires a reported 120 trucks in all, and Steve W. Shifflett spotted some of them when he shot this photo around 5:15pm Friday, September 25 at Fashion Square mall, an apparent rendezvous site before the final trek to Scott Stadium. (5)

When the Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy invited a few lucky fans to join the band onstage for the last song of the night, many of Thursday’s concert attendees complied, becoming musical participants. Meloy, center, was able to escape the stampeding fans unscathed More… (2)
A power saw can be heard outside The Southern, which opens tonight at the Downtown Mall site of the former Gravity Lounge with The Books. Co-owner Andy Gems says the new venue doesn’t have its ABC license, nor will food be served tonight, but all that’s coming soon. Gems took over the establishment in the spring with The Flat creperie owner Lauren McCraven after landlord Ludwig Kuttner ousted previous tenant Bill Baldwin. (0)
