Testimony ends in Morris trial
Lawyers finished presenting evidence Friday, July 10, in the first-degree murder trial of Alvin Lee “Butch” Morris for the 1988 death of Roger Lee Shifflett. The defense successfully impeached testimony of Morris’ first wife about whether he was in bed with her the morning of the slaying, but was unsuccessful in impeaching Detective Phil Giles’ strong opining that “everything in the file points to you” in an audiotaped interview with Morris. Closing arguments are Monday, July 13, and then jury deliberations begin on the four felony charges stemming from the murder and robbery at the now-demolished Southwind Grocery on Route 20.
