Had he not been gunned down in 1988, Roger Shifflett would have been 60 years old today. After a week of hearing testimony, the jury deciding if Alvin Lee “Butch” Morris is guilty of Shifflett’s murder began deliberations around 11am.

Folks on Ocracoke Island (a sort of Tarheel Nantucket) wait for the ferry back to the North Carolina vacation destination of Hatteras Island and points north along the Outer Banks. Promoting a new local agribusiness, Virginia Governor Tim Kaine was on hand July 13 for the grand opening of the Albemarle CiderWorks at Rural Ridge Orchard on Route 29 South, now one of only two hard cider producers in the state. Mollie Cox BryanMollie Cox Bryan, author of Mrs. Rowe’s Little Book of Southern Pies, will be signing books Saturday, July 18, from 1 to 3pm at Barnes & Noble.
And she’s bringing mini-pies from the legendary Mrs. Rowe’s Restaurant and Bakery in Staunton, but only 24, which will be dispensed on a first-come, first-served basis.
So don’t lollygag if you love pie. Pies and books were a sellout last week in Waynesboro. (1)
C.W. Hlad, the man whose poetry graced the pages of the C-Ville Review for the first half of the 1990s, has returned with a second collection from the Hypocrite Press. His latest is entitled Blackberry Bounty, Blackberry Boon, a slim volume of just eight poems which publisher Matthew Farrell lauds for their “pressing Southern-ness.” (2)
