news-reststop061 Since July 21, anyone heading north from Tennessee on I-81 who forgot to make a bathroom break at the Virginia Welcome Center might be disappointed by the sight of this closed Mile Marker 61-area rest stop near the burg of Rural Retreat. After all, the very next rest stop, the one near Radford at Mile Market 109, offered a similar barricade. Relief on the day these photos were shot, August 3, didn’t emerge until Mile Marker 129 near Elliston (which just happens to be the community that once played host to a health resort called Montgomery White Sulphur Springs and which will shine again when it gets Virginia’s new intermodal freight terminal.
