The bicyclist struck and killed Tuesday was a 49-year-old Virginia Beach man riding from Wintergreen Resort to surprise his son, a freshman at James Madison University, the Harrisonburg newspaper reports. A web search indicates that the victim was a renowned anesthesiologist.

The state police have gotten a search warrant for the driver’s cell phone. They want to see if she was on the cell phone or text messaging when she struck and killed the bicyclist (Joseph V. Mirenda ).

I’m sure that’s standard protocal for incidents like these…. it’s a true shame it really is. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, I have the utmost respect for those who pull over to use their phones. I see it more and more and it melts my heart. What’s sad is that those actions should be expected, not commended.
