5 cars in 2 wrecks on Ivy Road today

by Hawes Spencer

One person was taken away by the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad after this approximately 8:25am wreck today west of town on Ivy Road in front of the Volvo dealership. Three eastbound vehicles were involved, with a black Honda Pilot getting sandwiched between a bronze Honda Odyssey in front and a dark blue Ford F-250 pickup behind.

Moments after the accident, as toward-town commuter traffic slowed, a second collision, this one involving just two cars, occurred a few hundred yards west of the first. Albemarle Police officer Hutchinson (seen in photo) said he was too busy to immediately answer questions.

…Which of course means you were there, bothering him and taking pictures while he was trying to do his job. Nice.

    Good point!

We already know most of ‘em can’t multi-task very well!

Like recently when one couldn’t listen to the FM radio and drive at the same time without running over a wheelchair bound citizen!

How does asking a question become “bothering him?” I thought the press was supposed to ask question.

What’s up with the blog? For example, there’s a link to “Abbey Road” at the top left but it leads to a blank page. If you weren’t busy out there bothering cops maybe you could fix that! ;-)

    >>>Albemarle Police officer Hutchinson (seen in photo) said he was too busy to immediately answer questions.<<<<<

Not to get too messy here, but why was he forced to say he was “too busy”? - Couldn`t you tell? Did you notice he was busy and questioned him despite that? Does your article imply pique on the part of the reporter?

Why am I typing all this as if it were important?

Did Hutchinson offer to call you later? If not, he should have. Communication is a part of his job.

Jolted, it appears that perhaps the Field Training Officer forgot to tell Hutchinson the importance of communications. But this really isn’t a big deal when compared to the police academy forgetting to tell most of them the Constitution still exists.

Maybe the cop was “too busy” arguing with the fireman? It’s not like this doesn’t happen often. Know what the image above reminds me of? A rookie cop who arrested a fire captain for parking his fire apparatus in a traveled lane of traffic. What a three ring circus that was! Rookie ended up with egg on face. And the rookie ended up paying the fire captain $18,000 in damages for the false arrest!

    Rambo

My series of questions were intended to be facetious in response to the questions/discussions which immediately preceded my post.I meant to imply “What`s all the uproar about the cop not answereing questions?” Guess I wasn`t facetious enough.

Rod, I don’t see where you posted any questions in this thread. Was your reply deleted for some reason? Did I respond to your deleted reply? I’m at a loss recalling what questions you asked.

But anyhow, moving on, I don’t see where there has been any uproar in this thread. Hawes Spencer simply said the cop brushed him off with the excuse he was too busy to deal with him. No big deal. I am almost willing to bet Hawes Spencer didn’t lose any sleep over it. I think it’s great the cop tried to keep his mind on and deal with one thing at a time. As I said above, some of them don’t appear to be real good at multitasking.

To all: Sorry, I was wrong about the $18,000 I mentioned above. It seems it was only $17,500. And $10,000 of that $17,500 was punitive damages. Officers usually have to pay punitive damages out of their own pocket if the city or county refuses to pay them. (The captain was only awarded $17,500 because the jury felt sorry for the cop.)

Federal court jurors awarded $17,500 on Wednesday to a fire captain arrested by a Hazelwood police officer in a dispute over where a firetruck was parked during a 2003 car crash rescue.

Juror Betsy Vennemann said after the verdict, “We wanted to make a statement that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated.”

Capt. David Wilson won $7,500 in compensatory damages and $10,000 in punitive damages. Jurors, including a nun, said they went easy on the defendant, Officer Todd Greeves, because he has a family and they weren’t sure who would pay the bill.

Wilson testified that the Robertson Fire Protection District truck was parked in a way to protect rescuers working to free a victim from wreckage along Interstate 270 at McDonnell Boulevard. Greeves ordered that the truck be moved to accommodate passing traffic and arrested Wilson for ignoring him.

Wilson was released after 23 minutes and never charged. He sued, claiming civil rights violations that opened him to anxiety and humiliation. Greeves told the court the truck was creating a hazard and not adding to safety at the scene.

This is sorta related. It’s another reason why cops stay so busy. Once making an improper or false arrest they, the county attorney, and witnesses spend so much time in hearings, depositions and a jury trial for the next 2 or 3 years.
