The peanut scare that’s sweeping the nation has a central Virginia tie. Peanut Corporation of America, headquartered in Lynchburg and owned by the Parnell family, was notified repeatedly that tests showed salmonella at its plant in Blakely, Georgia. The company did nothing to stop the tainted goods from being distributed, according a February 8 New York Times article, and faces possible criminal charges. According to the Times, at least eight deaths and 19,000 illnesses in 43 states have been attributed to the scandal despite massive product recalls.
