Snap o’ the Day: Lonely chairs

The Chair Swing sat empty for most of Monday night, April 13, the fifth night of the Dogwood Festival carnival, which then closed, due to weather the following night. “See you Wednesday,” says the website; but with more April showers expected Wednesday the 15th, we’re just not sure. The fireworks are slated for Thursday, which— thankfully— has a clear forecast.

Kyle Long found guilty

Kyle Long, son NFL Football Hall-of-Famer Howie, was found guilty of drunk driving in Charlottesville General District Court today, NBC29 reports. On January 4, the Major League pitching prospect was pulled over at 2:01am driving the wrong way on 12 1/2 Street near the Corner district. After detecting alcohol on Long’s breath, an officer administered a field sobriety test, which Long failed. Long was sentenced to 30 days but the time was suspended on the condition that Long get in no more trouble with police in the next two years. (1)

Political partying at Shad Planking

The Virginia political season got its annual kickoff at the 61st annual Shad Planking in Wakefiled on Wednesday, April 15. Democratic gubernatorial candidates Terry McAuliffe and Brian Moran as well as Republican candidate Bob McDonnell were on hand to eat fish, drink beer, and engage in good-natured ribbing. A who’s who of Commonwealth politics turned out, and the Hook was there to bring the party to you. (2)

Recycle your old TVs!

Crutchfield is holding another free electronics recycling event. At the first event held in January this year, the electronics company collected more than 218,577 pounds (109 tons) of electronics– an amount it believes to be a state record for a single-day event. This year’s event is held at the store in Rio Hill shopping center on April 26 from noon-4pm. (3)

Virginians among least extroverted, least agreeable in U.S.

Virginians need to get out more often and be a little nicer– or at least that’s what a new psychological study [pdf] indicates. According to scientists from the University of Texas at Austin and Britain’s University of Cambridge, Virginia is the 45th-most introverted state, as well as being the 44th-most agreeable, according to their study of 500,000 Americans and their exhibition of the “Big Five” personality traits: extroversion, conscientiousness, openness, agreeableness, and neuroticism. The study finds North Dakotans are both the most extroverted, and most agreeable Americans.
