news-snap-whitebricks The Downtown Mall is not the only place where bricks are showing a bit of springtime efflorescence. Here, the new bricks outside the UVA Chapel, photographed on March 31, show the same phenomenon of salts leaching out and making the brick look white.

    A mason told me this is the result of using cheap brick. I surmise, the white poles and blue ropes are to keep students off the lawn –not very attractive and doubt this is part of the original design.
