Walkers, including blind ones (thanks to braille printing and an audible indicator), now have a new button to press to get a white light to cross McIntire Road and Preston Avenue, in what appears to be part of a new City push to add pedestrian improvements.

Is Michael Vick the new face of PETA?

Could the world’s most infamous pepetrator of animal cruelty become the new face of the one of the world’s most famous animal rights group? That’s what trade publication Advertising Age is reporting in an article that says Norfolk-based People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals are attempting to reach an agreement with former Virginia Tech quarterback and NFL standout Michael Vick to tape a series of public service announcements. Vick is presently serving a 23-month sentence for his role in a dogfighting ring run out of his house in Surry County, and will be released from prison on Wednesday, May 20.

Biz brief: Farewell to the Shadwell Store

After nearly 80 years, the old Shadwell Food Store, on a one-acre spike of land that splits 250 East and Route 231, is finally coming down. Owner Lloyd Wood (Wendell’s brother), who operates the Putt-Putt Golf Course on Rio Road, has an approved plan to build a new store, but has yet to find a willing tenant. “I don’t want it to be an eyesore, so we’re going to put it to bed,” says Wood. “In the meantime, if you know anybody who wants to open a store, tell em’ to give us a call.” (1)

McAuliffe jumps ahead in Dem primary

With the Democratic primary for governor only 40 days away, former Democratic National Committee chair Terry McAuliffe has apparently jumped out to a sizable lead over his two opponents for the nomination. According to a new poll from SurveyUSA, 38 percent of likely primary voters say they favor McAuliffe, with 22 percent backing State Senator Creigh Deeds, 22 percent supporting former delegate Brian Moran, and 18 percent still undecided. Still, at this early stage, former attorney general Bob McDonnell leads all three Democratic candidates in hypothetical general election matchups, with Deeds coming closest to catching McDonnell at a five percent defecit.

Bad bug: Swine flu confirmed in Central Virginia

The Virginia Department of Health has now confirmed the existence of two cases of swine flu, including an unnamed Central Virginia woman. Neither victim required hospitalization and both are “recovering well,” according to a Department release. Meanwhile, in another sign of caution, a Hook staffer just confirmed with personnel there that the Downtown Mall CVS pharmacy has sold out its stock of surgical face masks. (12)
